OverallTake a minimum of one person per month to the shooting range. Have them read the safety pamphlet first and quiz them on the safety rules, especially muzzle control and no finger on the trigger. See more in the safety section. Start them out by demonstrating the loading of the firearm, proper shooting, how to verify that it is unloaded and how to pass the gun to another person. Now have them do everything you just did, by themselves. Give more encouragement than instructions. Other than muzzle control, remember to keep the entire lesson relaxed. Safety & Competence are certainly goals here, but the main one is exposure & an enjoyable experience. Add a little at a time and keep everything happy and friendly, damn it! Have them wear good ear protection. If indoors or at a noisy range, use both ear plugs and muffs. Start at the closest target distance. Move to the medium distance and keep their targets. Fill out their name, date, firearm, cartridge on the best targets of each firearm as you see fit. Send this home with them. Also include a spent casing for each caliber they shot. Start with .22 rifle. If you have several, start with the bolt actions and make your way to semi-auto. Now, walk down the firing line and point out other rifle types. A little history, etc is OK, but don't try and impress and make sure they aren't bored. Extra time at the black powder rifles is cool... Next go to .22 pistols, as above. .38spl, 9mm, 45ACP. Remember to have them do everything themselves, while giving any needed instruction. By doing it themselves, they will have a bigger feeling of accomplishment and the learning will "stick" much more strongly. FamilyRemember all those households with only Dad knowing about firearms? That is dangerous and plays right into the hands of removing freedom and RKBA from our society. Check the resources section. Either take the whole family like I did, or start with the kids, etc. Next there are your nieces, nephews, brothers & sisters, and even your parents! Next there are your friends and neighbors. Don't be shy, you are changing the future of our country. Besides, it's rewarding and fun! Ever have this much fun writing donation checks? Who Next?Keep a log of all those people you've taken shooting. When you run out of people you are comfortable inviting, pull out your log and call those you've taken shooting before. Call someone and when they express interest on a second trip to the range, ask them to find two friends who have never shot to bring along. This takes the pressure off of you. It also assures that they will be comfortable at the range as they will already know each other. Bigger PlansAdvertise in local newspapers and hold a class / range day every month. First step is to make arrangements for two lanes at the local range at a discounted price. Second is to make arrangements with a classroom instructor. Third is to line up volunteer instructors and firearms for the firing line. Lastly is asking for donations for the news ads, etc. Look here for updates, such as a sample news ad, etc. |
